Welcome to JRCLS Student Chapter Members
By JOSEPH BENTLEY, JRCLS International Board Chair
I send you season’s greetings and a warm welcome to the J. Reuben Clark Law Society—the most unique law society in the world. Although our society shares its name with the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU, we are not a BYU alumni association. Membership is open to all law students and attorneys, whether LDS or not, who subscribe to this inspired mission statement:
We affirm the strength brought to the law by a lawyer’s personal religious conviction. We strive through public service and professional excellence to promote fairness and virtue, founded upon the rule of law.
In short, we have a divine destiny to help make the world a better place. Over 7,000 attorneys in nearly 70 chapters are bound together by this shared mission. Attorney chapters are proliferating on five continents—in such places as Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Mexico, Moscow, Europe and Canada.

JRCLS student chapters at American law schools were first organized in 2004 and are now up to 55. At this rate, student chapters will soon exceed attorney chapters—and may take root abroad.

JRCLS law student interaction at your campus can increase mutual strength and support among all who share our values. Law students also contribute energy and insights to attorney chapters. In turn, attorneys provide networking and placement opportunities for students, along with mentoring, personal enrichment programs, and professional service opportunities.

Women members are especially welcome, bringing many valued contributions as a growing and dynamic segment of our law society. Every chapter should utilize women’s talents, which will be visibly evident at the two main events held in 2007 for the entire JRCLS membership.

The first event is the Annual JRCLS Fireside on January 19, 2007. It will be a worldwide broadcast over the Church’s Satellite System, emanating from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. There will be a roundtable discussion among three General Authorities who have been lawyers, on the theme of “Balancing Life’s Priorities.” Moderators will be JRCLS Board members Annette Jarvis and Brent Belnap. The Franklin S. Richards Community Service Award will also be presented to deserving recipients who have provided extraordinary pro bono services to those most in need of legal or humanitarian assistance but cannot afford it.

The second All-Attorneys and Law Students event is the combined Annual JRCLS Conference, to be held on President’s Day weekend, February 16-17, 2007. As in 2006 at the Georgetown Law Center in Washington, D.C., renowned speakers will address a broad range of current topics. In 2007, it will be held in Malibu at the beautiful Pepperdine University School of Law. Sign up now at the highly subsidized student rate of $30 each at www.jrclsconference.com. Don’t miss it!

Thank you for the strength you bring to each other and our Society through your personal religious conviction and commitment to public service and professional excellence. I am honored to serve as the Society’s chair.
Rainmaking Presentation a Success
By SEAN NOBMANN, Duke
Based on the feedback received by the Student Chapter Int'l Board (SCIB), Bill Atkin's October 24 presentation on the art of client development was, and will continue to be, a resounding success. Thirty-eight schools have shown it, or will show it via DVD or the Internet.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
If you have had an experience where networking through JRCLS has helped you find summer or post-graduate employment, we would love to hear about it. Please submit your story by emailing it to Sean Nobmann.
