JRCLS student chapters in the eastern region held numerous successful events this past year some of which were co-sponsored events with attorney chapters or other schools. Below is a brief summary of these events:
Moot Court Competition
George Washington Religious Freedom Moot Court Competition – George Washington
Competitors came from law schools across the nation. Twenty-one distinguished judges, practitioners and scholars judged the competition.
Lectures
James McConkie on Religious Freedom – George Washington
Mr. McConkie, a trial attorney from Salt Lake City, spoke to the Society and school about two prominent religious freedom cases he was involved in: Axson-Flynn and Bauchman.
Bart Oates – Seton Hall
Mr. Oates is a former New York Giant and San Francisco 49er.
Judge Thomas Griffith – William & Mary, Virginia, and New York Metro Area Event
Judge Griffith, who currently sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, addressed several topics during these three events including: (1) the impeachment trial of President Clinton, (2) lawyers and the Atonement, (3) the curious role of the D.C. Circuit, and (4) making the Atonement the focus of all our church meetings.
Cynthia Ayers on Iran, Just War, and the War on Terrorism – Penn State
Professor Ayers is a National Security Agency Visiting Professor of Information Superiority at the U.S. Army War College.
Gayla Moss-Sorenson on Working In-House – Penn State
Ms. Moss-Sorenson is Vice President of Motorola’s Legal Department.
Brent Belnap on Balancing Law and Life – New York University
Mr. Belnap, Senior Vice President and Counsel at Citigroup and President of the Manhattan Stake, spoke to Society, school, and community members about balancing career and life.
Richard Bushman on Joseph Smith and the Failure of the Law – New York University
Mr. Bushman, professor emeritus of history at Columbia University, spoke to JRCLS students from several New York area schools and attorneys.
Panels
Women in the Law – George Washington
This panel featured five prominent female LDS attorneys from the D.C. area: Hannah Smith, Cassidy Pinegar, Audrey Perry, Rana Lehr-Lenhardt, and Jaimee Neel. The event was open to area schools and the local chapter of the JRCLS.
The Mormon Way of Doing Business I – Yale
This panel featured: (1) David Checketts, former Madison Square Garden CEO; (2) James Quigley, global CEO of Deloitte Touche; (3) David Neeleman, founder and CEO of JetBlue; (4) Rod Hawes, founder and CEO of Life Re; and (5) Jeff Benedict, author of “The Mormon Way of Doing Business”. The panel was moderated by Glen Beck.
The Mormon Way of Doing Business II – Columbia
This panel featured: (1) David Neeleman, founder and CEO of JetBlue; and (2) Rod Hawes, founder and CEO of Life Re. The panel was led by Jeff Benedict, author of “The Mormon Way of Doing Business”.
Religion and the Environment – Yale
This panel was co-sponsored with other religious organizations. |
