| This spring, the Duke chapter of the JRCLS organized a seminar for our members to discuss legal and social issues from the perspective of LDS beliefs. Duke Law School allows groups of students to organize their own “ad hoc seminars,” design their own syllabi (with faculty approval), and receive one credit for attendance and a few short writing assignments. This year we discussed such issues as the Constitution, criminal punishment, just war, and contemporary lawsuits facing the Church. We pulled readings from case reporters, law reviews, BYU Studies, and other LDS-related scholarly journals. Each week, two or three students would be responsible for writing brief response papers based on the readings and leading the discussion in class. It was a great opportunity for LDS students to discuss these topics, many of which are addressed in our other classes, in a more in-depth manner and in the light of the Gospel. |
