I see the future of the Student Chapters International Board (SCIB) being a forum for the JRCLS presidents to exchange ideas and information. Some of the best discussions I think the SCIB has had over the past year were those that focused on what different JRCLS chapters were doing. I found that knowing what other chapter presidents were doing helped spark more creativity in my chapter’s activities.
As with every relatively new chapter, there is always a learning curve and a need to build momentum for the organization. My chapter has worked hard this year to try and make it more successful in terms of the number of activities and member participation. As our new president takes over, I hope that he will be able to learn from the successes of other JRCLS chapters through the SCIB and apply them to our chapter. I think fostering this kind of knowledge could be one of the greatest strengths of the SCIB.
Additionally, I think that it would be helpful for the SCIB to more formally explain to incoming presidents what the SCIB is, the importance of participation, and the resources that are available. Over the past three years, I have been in the unique position to participate every so often in SCIB monthly phone calls. I believe that without that exposure prior to becoming president, I would not have had the appreciation or understanding of the SCIB that I had when I became president. The SCIB is a very valuable resource, but it cannot help those who don’t know of its existence or understand how it can assist them.
As an update on my chapter, I think that the most successful event we had this semester was a speaker we brought to the law school. Along with the Asian Law Students Association, we co-sponsored a talk by Elder Brian, President over the Historic Kirtland sights, a former judge, and law professor. He came and spoke about his experience teaching the American rule of law in China. We had a good turnout from the school. This event was a good opportunity for us to expose the JRCLS to the school, and foster some goodwill. |
