The Arizona State Student Chapter held its third annual Fall Judges Forum at the home of Judge Daniel Barker. Judge Barker sits on the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One (PHX). The Fall Judges Forum brings together judges from the community who subscribe to differing faiths to speak on how their faith impacts their life in the law.
The Forum takes place at Judge Barker?s home (in the backyard, thanks to beautiful Arizona weather). It is attended by student members and professionals of JRCLS. This year about 40 students, 4 judges, and several attorneys and ASU faculty attended the event.
A catered dinner was provided to begin the event, then students were given an opportunity to introduce themselves, and their spouses or guests were asked what they liked least and most about the student being in law school. Judge Barker then introduced the judges and each spoke of how their particular faith has impacted their work as attorneys and how it continues to impact them as a judge.
This year's panelists included:
? Chief Judge John C. Gemmill, Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One
? Judge Bethany G. Hicks, Maricopa County Superior Court
? Judge David K. Udall, Maricopa County Superior Court
The event has become one of our most highly anticipated and successful events. With each year bringing more and more LDS 1Ls to Arizona State, we anticipate that next year we will have to hold it at another, larger venue. Most likely it will be held in the soon-to-be-completed LDS Church Institute Building across the street from the law school. We currently have 80 members of JRCLS.
