A New Chapter Begins « Back to Front Page
By MARK MCPHERSON, Saint Louis
We are proud to announce that the Saint Louis Student Chapter is now official! We are looking forward to building the foundations of an involved JRCLS student chapter here in St. Louis.

We held our inaugural meeting during Fall Semester and were surprised to find 15 people in attendance! We suspect the free pizza may have been the determining factor since we expected only 8-10 of us, although our recruiting efforts were admirable. The meeting consisted of a powerpoint presentation in one of the law school?s lecture halls introducing our organization, mission statement, and J. Reuben Clark, Jr.?s biography. We also discussed upcoming nation-wide events as well as our student chapter?s fall calendar which consisted of a community service project and two lunch-time speakers who are local attorneys. The students in attendance admitted the pizza was a selling point for our meeting, but expressed sincere interest in continuing to attend future meetings and events.

Due to our late start this semester, we anticipate a substantially busier Spring Semester. Our goals include teaming up with other student organizations at the law school on service projects, showing Brother Atkin?s client development presentation, and of course having our opening social. We are also planning on asking several local attorneys to be part of our lunch-time speaker series, which we plan on having twice a month. If our first meeting?s turn-out is any indication of general interest, we anticipate forming a couple of committees to handle community service and relations with other law school organizations during Spring Semester.

We are looking forward to some great networking opportunities here in St. Louis. There is not yet a professional chapter in town, but plans are in the works for one because of the interest several city attorneys have expressed. So if there are any suggestions in this area, feel free to send them our way!
