I moved from Salt Lake City, UT to Columbia, MO to start law school this past August. My wife and I made the 1,300 mile move with our two-year-old son and one-month-old daughter. Although the plan was to move into our home when we first arrived in Columbia, there was a delay in getting it completed on time. I started orientation, and the first couple of days of law school, living in a hotel room with my wife and two kids. Already overwhelmed with the prospect of starting law school, having to deal with a screaming newborn and a bored two-year-old (who was confined to a small room for most of the day) just compounded the stress I was feeling.

When I left for the first day of orientation, I had no idea that the J. Reuben Clark Law Society existed at my school. When I spotted the table they had set up for orientation I introduced myself and met a few LDS law students who were there. That morning I was both exhausted (from a lack of sleep) and overwhelmed, but after speaking with the LDS students I met from JRCLS I felt more relaxed about starting law school. They told me about my professors, gave me advice on how to approach my classes, offered me course outlines, and gave me information about the local wards in the area. My wife and I ended up getting together with them that same evening to meet the rest of the LDS law students in the area. It was comforting to make friends and have contacts that were willing to help me with questions I had about my first year experience of law school. Getting advice and help from 2Ls and 3Ls has given me an advantage in many ways over most of the other students in my class. Having a chapter of JRCLS at my law school has been a tremendous help during my first year experience.
