Pro Bono Initiative « Back to Front Page
By Brigham Young University
The BYU Student Chapter began piloting a program this year patterned after the Hispanic Initiative already in place in Salt Lake City. Adam Ford, chair of the Pro Bono Committee of JRCLS, introduced the program and fielded questions for nearly 100 students on October 25 at the law school. The program will provide minorities and underprivileged individuals, who are typically under represented or who otherwise would not have access to legal representation, with legal aid at a reduced cost or at no cost at all. If the program is successful here in Provo, there is a possibility of nationwide implementation.

The new program consists of the following core elements: (1) Clergy leaders refer underprivileged individuals to the program, (2) attorneys?largely from the local JRCLS attorney chapter?volunteer their time to represent the underprivileged individuals, and (3) JRCLS law students volunteer to assist the attorneys.

There are currently 40 attorneys in the Provo area who have signed up and agreed to donate their time and skills. Future reports of the program?s success will follow....
