Judge Thomas Griffith, D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, was the featured speaker at the opening social for the Harvard Law Latter-day Saints Student Association (the Harvard Student Chapter of JRCLS) on September 16. The event consisted of a dinner, introductions of all current HLLDS members, the announcing of 1L mentors, and a talk by Judge Griffith. Harvard Dean Elena Kagan and Professor Mary Ann Glendon, who serves as the HLLDS faculty sponsor, also attended and gave brief remarks. Approximately 40 law students attended along with their spouses and children.
The weekend was a busy one for Judge Griffith. Before the opening social, the Judge was able to join several of the students at the BYU football game at Boston College. On Sunday, September 17, Judge Griffith spoke to the Harvard Federalist Society and also gave a talk at an Institute Fireside in the evening.
In early October, the University of Utah Student Chapter also hosted Judge Griffith as a speaker. His topic was ?Practicing Law and Practicing Religion.? The event was well attended by both students and faculty and led to many new members joining the Society.
